Old Town Mill, or Mitchell Mill as it is known locally, is a Grade 2 listed former textile mill situated north of Hebden Bridge. The mill dates back to 1851 with later additions in the 1880’s. The mill was extended in the 1890s for the Mitchell Brothers, to accommodate a worsted mill. Old Town Mill is a good example of an integrated mill where an original weaving shed was adapted to incorporate advancements in mechanisation – for example the addition of the engine room for a small beam engine. The mill is a prominent landmark on the horizon with stunning views towards Hepstonstall and Stoodley Pike.
In the early 1960s the mill site was used for poultry keeping, sheepskin rug manufacture and cattle.
The mill has now been acquired by Clay Developments, a family-owned business based in Huddersfield. It is now being restored to providing 21 new homes, business units and a cafe. The scheme, designed by Gayle Appleyard, of Gagarin Studio, involves the conversion of the buildings to provide Town Houses inspired by the local vernacular of Hebden’s ‘double-decker’ over-and-under dwellings. The chimney will remain as an independent structure set in landscaping incorporating the former millpond. The first phase of 4 new build units have now been completed and work is now starting on converting the main mill building
Ben Clay is clearly passionate about restoring the building and is leading a small team of skilled craftsmen who are painstakingly restoring the mill to accommodate new uses while incorporating historic features within this landmark building. Final completion is expected in 2023
